President's Letter: July 2007

We just concluded another successful training session with attendees from all over the country, as well as a group from the Middle East.

Why do people come all that way to Fresno? I don't think it's because of Yosemite's big trees, the local casinos, or our AAA Baseball team, though they certainly are interesting.

One reason is because proactive companies want to train their teams to use their monitoring equipment at the highest level possible. Others want to keep up-to-date with the latest changes. Some companies really want to get to know the system and the company that is behind it before they make an investment in their infrastructure.

Whatever the reason, the results are the same, our graduating classes learn a wealth of monitoring best practices and come back to their offices with lots of new things they want to try out.

We've been growing here a bit a DPS. We've adding some new people and promoted others to new positions. Don't be surprised if you talk to some new voices on the phone. We have also been putting effort into increasing our production capacity. This means that all of our clients should be getting their orders a bit sooner.

A quick update on our new building construction: All the metal studs are in place, and the building is getting wrapped in something like chicken wire. We look forward to getting some plaster on the walls soon.

You will definitely want to read about our T/Mon GFX upgrade. We have made major upgrades to the underlying protocols and the way in which the database is maintained. This has a dramatic effect on processing speed and greatly simplifies working with multiple GFX workstations.

The one constant with DPS is change. Every department moves forward with the ultimate goal of better serving our client base.

Our engineering department exemplifies this with our incremental engineering program. We are always adding new client-requested features to our software, but what many don't know is that we have generational hardware as well. The NetGuardian 832 alarm remote is on its fourth generation. Each generation brings new value to our client base. This mindset has served us well in the past and we look forward to its continuation.

Some of our engineering changes are also focused on reducing manufacturing costs. This effort, in conjunction with other programs, has allowed us to hold our prices in an economy where costs are rising.

Another form of incremental engineering is adding new functionality to existing products. This is exactly what we did with our new DNP3 software module for the T/Mon NOC. With this software module installed, T/Mon users will be able to collect alarms from DNP3 devices just as easy as they can from any other protocol. Be sure to read the DNP3 article in this issue for additional details.

We have also been updating our process so that our clients will receive an email when purchase orders are approved and when they ship; to give the right people improved visibility of their important orders.

Speaking of orders, the end of the year is approaching fast. Don't let your network go another year without that monitoring upgrade. Plan now.

Next month sneak peek: DPS user group coming soon!
