Modbus is a common protocol for many generators, plus other kinds of equipment. However, it can be a challenge to find an RTU that can take in Modbus alarms. Even more challenging, is finding a device that can mediate Modbus to a more universal protocol, like SNMP, before sending it to your central SNMP manager.
What you need is a Modbus-to-SNMP mediator. Look for a mediator that can take in your Modbus registers and mediate them to SNMP traps to send to your master station. When researching devices, look for mediators that are easy to setup and have a user-friendly web browser interface. As a bonus, a device with RTU capabilities that can monitor other devices and alarms at your site will help you double-dip with your investment.
