Choose customizable IP cameras to ensure a successful deployment

These days, security cameras have become commonplace among business equipment. Some people are still relying on CCTV methods. While these cameras and networks can function rather well for small homes and businesses, IP cameras comprise most new installations.

Unlike the cameras used in CCTV networks, IP Cameras are digital and transmit their data back and forth via IP computer networks (LAN) or the internet. While the majority of cameras that function in this way are simple webcams, those that are used in industrial applications are referred to as "IP Cameras" or "Netcams".

The two main types of IP Cameras are:

  • Centralized: These cameras need a central Network Video Recorder, or NVR, to receive, store, and analyze the images the camera picks up.
  • Decentralized: In order to promote efficiency and ease of use, these cameras come with built-in recording and management functionality.

Potential Advantages:

  • 2-way Communications: Ability to utilize a live-feed with intercom capabilities
  • Flexibility: IP Cameras can be used on any point within a computer network (wireless options too)
  • Distributed Intelligence: The option to install analytic parameters into the recordings
  • Simplicity: Transmission of data and Pan/Tilt/Zoom commands over a single cable
  • Encryption: Digital communications allow for encoded transmissions
  • Remote Access: Can log-in to view your camera from anywhere around the world if it has an internet connection
  • Power over Ethernet: With growing demands for efficiency, many Netcams allow power and data to be supplied on the same line

Potential Disadvantages:

  • Cost: Industrial IP Cameras are more expensive than their consumer, webcam, counterparts
  • Bandwidth: Due to the larger file sizes associated with digital recordings, bandwidth demands are relatively high
  • Security: While all security cameras are susceptible to attacks, by transmitting images over the internet, you may open up your network to hackers

While these few disadvantages may make you hesitate, it's worth noting that with a little foresight and proper planning, a custom-designed IP Camera Surveillance system can greatly enhance your network visibility and security.

The SiteMon IP camera is an IP camera built on an RTU (remote monitoring device) foundation that is very customizable. You can configure it to capture based on door openings or motion sensing, and images can be logged on a T/Mon master station.
