About Nemont Telephone

Nemont Telephone Cooperative, Inc. was organized in 1950 to bring telephone service to rural communities. Today, Nemont provides cellular, local and long-distance voice, internet, and cable TV services.

The cooperative has received national recognition for its broadband deployment in rural areas. Supporting reliable communications across geographically dispersed locations requires dependable telecom monitoring and fast response to network events.

The Challenge: Limited Visibility and Risk of Extended Outages

As Nemont's network evolved, maintaining full alarm visibility became critical. The cooperative needed to monitor transports and critical conditions such as T1 circuits across multiple sites.

Without reliable, real-time alarm notifications, small issues could escalate into major service disruptions - especially after hours.

On several occasions, Nemont's alarm monitoring equipment alerted technicians before problems caused major damage.

"The gear has helped us prevent things like weekend-long outages."
- Zac Ohlson, Nemont Telephone

Nemont needed a monitoring platform that was dependable, proactive, and compatible with both internal and partner-managed systems.

The Solution: T/Mon Master Station + NetGuardian RTUs

Nemont first installed DPS monitoring gear in 2006. A partner organization, Vision Net, was already using a T/Mon master station and NetGuardians to monitor critical alarms and transports after hours. Based on that experience, Nemont chose to deploy DPS technology when upgrading its own monitoring system.

Today, Nemont uses:

  • T/Mon Master Station for centralized alarm management and visibility
  • NetGuardian 832A G5 RTUs for remote site alarm collection and reporting

Between Nemont's own T/Mon master and Vision Net's T/Mon system, alarms from NetGuardian RTUs and other monitored equipment are fully integrated and visible.

This architecture enables:

  • Instant alarm notifications
  • Monitoring of T1 transport and other critical conditions
  • Centralized visibility across the network
  • Proactive response before service impacts escalate

"T/Mon is so much better than the system we had before. It saves time just having it."

- Allison Wang, Nemont Telephone

How the Monitoring System Works

Nemont Network Monitoring Application Drawing
Between their own T/Mon Master and VisionNet's, Nemont is able to monitor alarms from their NetGuardian 832A G5 RTUs and other monitored equipment.

Phase What Happened
Initial Deployment (2006) Nemont implemented T/Mon and NetGuardian RTUs to improve alarm visibility and network monitoring.
Partner Integration Vision Net's T/Mon system monitors alarms alongside Nemont's own master station for after-hours coverage.
Ongoing Monitoring NetGuardian 832A G5 RTUs collect alarms from remote equipment and forward them to T/Mon for centralized visibility.
Training & Optimization Nemont technicians attended DPS Factory Training to deepen expertise and improve system usage.

Factory Training: Expanding Monitoring Capabilities

Zac Ohlson attended DPS Factory Training at DPS Headquarters in Fresno, California, in April 2012.

He arrived with basic operational knowledge but quickly saw the depth of the platform.

"My prior knowledge was to log in and just silence nuisance alarms, and maybe look at alarms in other areas."

After only one day of training, his understanding dramatically improved.

"My goal was to come to Factory Training and learn more about the T/Mon and the NetGuardian, and on Day 1, my knowledge went 10-fold over what I knew."

This expanded expertise positioned Nemont to take fuller advantage of advanced monitoring capabilities.

Preparing for SNMP Alarm Expansion

As Nemont plans to deploy new switches that use SNMP, T/Mon's SNMP trap processing capabilities will play a larger role.

"Right now, we don't do much with SNMP, but soon we're going with a different switch, and it uses SNMP. Understanding how T/Mon processes SNMP traps is going to make my life phenomenally easier."

With proper training and integration, Nemont is prepared to expand SNMP-based monitoring without replacing its existing alarm management platform.

Products Used in This Solution

  • T/Mon Master Station - Centralized telecom alarm monitoring platform that consolidates alarms from remote sites and third-party systems.
  • NetGuardian 832A RTU - Remote terminal unit (RTU) that collects site alarms and forwards them for centralized visibility.

FAQ: Telecom Remote Site Monitoring & Alarm Visibility

How can telecom providers maintain visibility across remote sites?

Using remote terminal units (RTUs) like NetGuardian devices, alarms are collected at each site and forwarded to a centralized master station such as T/Mon. This provides unified visibility across transports, power systems, and other critical infrastructure.

What happens if alarm monitoring is not proactive?

Without instant alarm notifications, small issues can escalate into prolonged outages. Proactive monitoring allows technicians to respond before problems cause major service disruptions.

Can T/Mon integrate with SNMP-based equipment?

Yes. T/Mon processes SNMP traps from compatible network devices. This enables monitoring of newer switches and equipment without replacing the master station.

Is it possible to monitor alarms across multiple organizations?

Yes. In Nemont's case, both its own T/Mon master and Vision Net's T/Mon system monitor alarms from NetGuardian RTUs and other equipment, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

How does training impact monitoring effectiveness?

Factory Training helps technicians move beyond basic alarm acknowledgment to fully leveraging advanced monitoring features. As Nemont experienced, deeper knowledge improves efficiency and prepares teams for future expansions.
