Top 7 Benefits of Multi-Generational Hardware

Have you noticed that the NetGuardian 216 is G3? How the NetGuardian 832A is G5? Why does DPS do that? These are new generations of hardware - complete with more powerful capabilities.

When you deploy the latest generation of an RTU, you get proven design and modern functionality.

Let's look at the 7 key reasons why DPS has multi-generational hardware.

1. Responding to client feedback

When DPS makes a device, it's designed with DPS clients in mind. Many DPS RTUs are designed specifically based on feedback from a client - and this feedback is used to make new generations of hardware with more features.

Using D-Wire in multiple RTUs
The popular D-Wire sensor technology on the TempDefender IT has been successfully implemented on several other devices, including the NetGuardian 832A, 420 and the BVM G3.

There is no generic one-size-fits-all solution that will work with every network. The guaranteed way to get the network monitoring results for your needs is to have a system designed specifically for you.

2. Adding new capabilities

Naturally, networks evolve and grow over time. This means DPS clients consistently need new features and capabilities so their network monitoring can keep up with their network. DPS is regularly finding new technology and new features to add to all of their devices - such as RADIUS authentication, SNMPv3, T1/E1, and fiber support. You get hardware with more features to help tackle your monitoring challenges.

3. Incorporating new features into the proven design, instead of starting from scratch

Instead of starting a whole new product from scratch, you get better equipment that's based on proven hardware with new, additional features, which we call "building blocks". This means DPS clients get a device built on proven design with new technology built in.

feature release matrix
As you can see in the above example, 4 new RTU generations were released in Q1-Q4. At DPS, evolutionary design means that each new-generation RTU will commonly inherit features previously developed for other RTUs. The Q4 release gets 4 additional features, even though just one is "brand new."

4. Capitalizing on the technology introduced in other projects and RTUs

Often, new technology will be released with an RTU (for example the popular D-Wire sensor network), which is now included on most new-generation RTUs - like the NetGuardian 420, the Remote Power AB6, and the BVM 48 G2. When a new feature or piece of technology works - it's incorporated into as many devices as possible in their next generations. This allows all DPS clients to enjoy the new features of the devices that fit their network.

5. Keeping the equipment at the forefront of the industry

When it comes to solving network monitoring problems, you simply can't do it with outdated hardware. That's why DPS is always adding new features and improving the capabilities of existing gear - like SNMPv3 to newer generation hardware. Without innovation and progress, you wouldn't have the latest and greatest technology at your disposal.

6. Holding prices in place through continuing best practices and cost reduction

By incorporating best practices and cost reduction in the design of new products, DPS can improve the production process to more efficiently produce RTUs for clients. This means prices frequently remain the same (instead of rising each year) and DPS clients can enjoy multiple purchases at the same price.

This is made possible by the top-to-bottom vertical integration at DPS. The entire manufacturing process is completed at DPS headquarters - from the engineering to the assembly to even cutting the metal chassis. When you handle the entire process, it's easy to incorporate new best practices and changes to optimize the production process.

7. Leveraging Moore's Law

Technology and computing power grows at exponential rates. Moore's Law states that approximately every 18 months, computing power doubles - faster processors for more responsiveness, more code space for new functionality, etc. DPS capitalizes on this with new generations of hardware to support growing software functionality.

DPS solutions are always incorporating the latest and greatest features to optimize network monitoring. You'll never be left in the dust by newer and better technology when choosing DPS as your vendor.
