RoHS: How Environmental Restrictions Can and Will Affect You

The World is Changing. Are You Ready?

RoHS (The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive) restricts the use of six hazardous materials, most notably lead, in the manufacture of electronic equipment. Adopted by the European Union in 2003 to reduce environmental pollution, the directive recently took effect in July of 2006.

The use of the following materials is restricted by RoHS:

  • Restriction of Hazardous Materials (RoHS)Lead (0.1% max)
  • Mercury (0.1% max)
  • Cadmium (0.1% max)
  • Hexavalent Chromium (0.01% max)
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) (0.1% max)
  • Polybrominated Diphenyls Ethers (PBDE) (0.1% max)
This change alone had a substantial impact on Telecom, but it is only the first wave in a worldwide shift toward strict environmental regulation. China and Japan have also established similar directives that create new labeling and information disclosure requirements. China RoHS takes effect on March 1, 2007.

Telecom Equipment is Not Exempt from RoHS

While RoHS does currently allow telecom equipment to contain lead in solder ("5 of 6 compliance"), all other parts must comply completely with the directive.

Preparing for the Future

Purchasing RoHS-compliant products is a great best practice, even if you're not currently facing regulation. It's an easy step to take that reflects a forward-thinking attitude in you, your department, and your company.

But "forward-thinking" doesn't only refer to employee and environmental health. If you want to be ready for the near future, RoHS compliance is something that you must think about. New restrictions are coming. If you make RoHS a part of your purchasing today, you'll be better prepared for tomorrow.

Resellers Must Be Especially Careful

If you are an OEM, purchasing RoHS-compliant products makes even more sense, as the geographic market for non-compliant equipment will continue to shrink over the years. Don't lose a large sale to a key market by not having RoHS-compliant products available.

Top-Notch Monitoring Products, Now with RoHS Compliance
