32 extra alarm points...

The NetGuardian 832A and the NetGuardian 864A have a lot in common. They're both built upon the same cutting-edge DPS processor platform. They have the same analog inputs and control relays. Both NetGuardians report alarms in SNMPv1, SNMPv2c and SNMPv3. They also share many feature options, including external temperature probe, analog battery monitoring, real-time clock, 10/100 switch, and wireless GSM or CDMA connectivity.

The big difference between the NetGuardian 832A and the 864A model is discrete alarm points. The 832A includes a standard capacity of 32 discrete points. That's suitable for most medium-sized remote sites. For larger sites, however, the NetGuardian 864A doubles the 832A for a total of 64 discrete alarm points.

Having twice as many alarm points on the 864A creates a real economic benefit, because the price difference between these two models is very small. Even better for your jam-packed equipment racks, you get double capacity without adding any size to the slim 1RU NetGuardian chassis.

Even though the NetGuardian 864A isn't any bigger than the 832A, the amphenol connector termination patterns will be different. The 864A accepts twice as many discrete points through the same 2 amphenol connectors, so they necessarily use different pinouts. For simplicity, it's an industry best practice to standardize on either the NetGuardian 832A or the 864A.

Another difference between these NetGuardian models is the set of expansion options. The NetGuardian 832A accepts up to 3 expansion chasses of 48 discrete points each, for a maximum capacity of 176 points. The 864A model can also support 3 expansion chasses, but they add 64 points each. Combined with the 64 on-board points, you can monitor up to 256 discrete alarm points on a fully expanded NetGuardian 864A.

For most deployments, the small incremental cost of the NetGuardian 864A is well worth the extra alarm capacity. It seems that 64 points is right in the "sweet spot" of alarm capacity in many different industries we've worked with. Even at sites where you don't need the extra capacity yet, you're preparing for the future and standardizing on a single RTU model at all of your sites.

The NetGuardian 864A is also an ideal way to migrate from the KDA platform. You'll still have the same 64 alarm points you depend on, plus you'll gain all the advantages of modern hardware.
