Reserve Your Seat TodayJust like all computers, network monitoring gear uses a code-language to communicate with each other. This language is also known as a protocol. There have been many standards and proprietary protocols over the years as companies developed new products or went out of business.
One of these languages is also known as Harris' SCAN protocol. It is a proprietary language developed by Harris Corporation along with their FarScan interface for use in their network and communications monitoring gear. As the goals of their business changed, the products that continued to support this protocol began to lose factory support. These days, it is known as an obsolete system since the original support and supply chains no longer recognize it as a viable resource.
While there are still many companies out there that are still utilizing this "outdated" technology to monitor their valuable networks, there is little to no information online.
FarScan is a system that uses one or more administrative computers, called managers, to perform tasks associated with monitoring or managing devices on a communications network. Each managed system executes at all times, a software component called an agent which reports information via Scan Protocol to the manager.
It is now possible to monitor SCAN network elements using the multi-protocol master T/Mon. This offers both a reliable near-term fix and the ability to migrate to newer remote units over the course of several budget cycles.
