How to Set Up Temperature/Environmental Monitoring for Your Infrastructure

At DPS Telecom, ensuring the safety and functionality of server rooms and data centers is a common application for our remote monitoring solutions. Because we make general-purpose monitoring devices for temperature and humidity and other levels, we also sometimes see deployments into other facilities like boiler rooms and elevator shafts.

Today, let's delve into a conversation between "JP" (a DPS sales rep) and a client seeking to improve environmental/temperature monitoring in these critical areas.

You can simplify complex monitoring needs with tailored solutions

The conversation begins with this prospective DPS client expressing a need to monitor environmental conditions like ambient temperature across various facilities. They are particularly concerned about temperature fluctuations that could potentially harm equipment or disrupt operations:

"I'm exploring options for monitoring temperature in our server, boiler, and elevator rooms. I've heard about your (NetGuardian) V16 and M16 devices. Can these help with temperature alerts?"

JP was able to confirm this temperature-monitoring capability immediately:

"Absolutely. Both devices can be configured to send temperature alerts. The temperature sensors you choose will need to be connected to an RTU (Remote Telemetry Unit) that can handle sensor inputs like the M16 or V16. We offer both discrete and analog sensors, depending on whether you want a simple trigger at a certain temperature or continuous temperature monitoring."

The next step for JP was asking more questions so he could recommend the most suitable monitoring setup based on the client's specific requirements and existing infrastructure.

Discrete vs. Analog Temperature Sensors

As the client elaborated on their needs, JP introduced the idea of discrete versus analog sensors, explaining their functionality and suitability based on the specific monitoring requirements described:

"Discrete sensors will trigger an alarm at a set temperature, like 85 degrees, for immediate alerts. Analog sensors, however, provide exact temperature readings, offering a detailed view of environmental conditions over time."

In general, we recommend analog sensing for values like temperature whenever possible. In 2024, there's not a whole lot of price difference. The added monitoring clarity is almost always worth it.

What is the ideal monitoring setup for this project?

Next, JP gives an explanation of how DPS's TempDefender (a small RTU) can be utilized to monitor not just heat but also other environmental factors like humidity and water presence, which could pose risks to server rooms:

"To give you a comprehensive monitoring solution, our TempDefender G2 could be ideal. It can connect with various sensors, including our D-Wire Temp/AirFlow Sensor for heat detection near vents and our Temp/Humidity sensor for general room conditions. Here's a basic application drawing to illustrate how it all connects within your network environment."
"Take a look at this generic drawing, which includes a TempDefender connected to both a temp/humidity sensor and a water sensor. This setup not only monitors temperatures but also guards against potential water damage, expanding your monitoring capabilities significantly."

As we frequently do at DPS, including in PDF price quotes, JP shared diagrams that visually explain the setup. Diagrams like these help you visualize how the TempDefender system could fit into your infrastructure.

Further exploring this client's specific needs and concerns

The client shows interest in monitoring both heat and air conditioning systems within a confined space, which introduces additional considerations for sensor placement and monitoring scope. He was also ready to receive a price proposal to start moving the project toward a purchase:

"So, we're considering real-time monitoring for both the heat and AC in a small room. I'll consult with our HVAC company to see how best to implement this. Can you prepare a quote for both the TempDefender and the NetGuardian LT G2 systems?"

JP promised to quote both options for comparison purposes:

"Both systems will be quoted for you. The NetGuardian LT G2 might be more cost-effective if you're only monitoring temperature, but I'll include options for both so you can compare and make an informed decision based on your upcoming HVAC consultation."

The HVAC company would be contacted next

As the conversation wraps up, the client asks about follow-up and how to continue the discussion once they have more information:

"How do I proceed after speaking with the HVAC company? Is there a reference number, or can I contact anyone at DPS?"

JP gave several options:

"You can reach out directly to me, JP, at sales@dpstele.com, or call our sales team at 1-800-693-0351. Ask for me or anyone else. I'm actually new on the Sales team, so you'll actually be getting an 'upgrade' if I'm not at my desk. :) I'll also send you a quote by email, so you'll have all the information you need to proceed."

Final monitoring recommendations and a proactive support offer

Toward the end of the conversation, JP took some proactive steps to ensure the client felt supported and informed about the next steps. He confirmed the client's contact information and promised a prompt follow-up with a detailed quote:

"I will have a quote out via email later today or tomorrow morning. You're welcome to contact me directly, or any member of our sales team, should you need further assistance."
