Kuwait National Petroleum Company Integrates with T/Mon

Kuwait National Petroleum Company is a state-owned refiner and distributor of petroleum products. It controls three refineries at a capacity of 410,000 barrels of oil per day.

"We have temperature sensors, alarms going off for temperature, so they benefit us a lot. I think if we want to expand what we bring into T/Mon, it will be with these."

Maisaa Bakhesh is a telecommunications engineer for KNPC. "Basically, now I am an administrator for various systems. I also evaluate contracts and write new tenders for the company."

"We have a Microwave system with its own monitoring system; we have a SDH system with its own monitoring system; and a TETRA radio system that also has its own monitoring system. So I'm thinking now we can consolidate all of these with T/Mon."

Part of her job at KNPC involves monitoring the company's telecommunication equipment rooms with remote sensors. "We have temperature sensors, alarms going off for temperature, so I think they benefit us the most," she explains. Some of these locations are 14 kilometers from the central office, making efficient monitoring essential to noticing small problems before they become big ones. "I think if we want to expand what we bring into T/Mon, it will be with these."

"Training was amazing, more than I expected. I was really 'into' these classes."

T/Mon aggregates monitoring information from devices with proprietary or legacy monitoring equipment. Aside from the dedicated alarm equipment, Bakhesh works with multiple devices that have their own proprietary monitoring systems. "We have an A microwave system with its own monitoring system; we have an SDH system with its own monitoring system; a Tetra radio system that also has its own monitoring system," she explains. "So I'm thinking now we can consolidate all of these with T/Mon."

Though KNPC is working with a variety of equipment, each with its own, proprietary monitoring system, T/Mon can consolidate all of the monitoring information to a single interface. T/Mon will then output all of the monitoring information in SNMP and send it to the company's HP OpenView (HPOV) system if needed.

"The GPRS modem, I didn't know DPS had that on RTUs. We have many remote sites that could make use of that."

Factory Training Covers the Fundamentals Bakhesh attended DPS Factory Training to learn more about the T/Mon system deployed at KNPC. "Training was amazing, more than I expected," she says of the training event. She had the chance to learn not only about the T/Mon, but the RTUs that report to it and the ASCII training to make her company's self-monitored systems talk to the T/Mon. "I was really into it. It reminded me of my programming classes from college."

A Chance to Look at New Wireless Technologies At Training, Bakhesh had the chance to learn about new technologies offered from DPS. She was particularly interested in the GPRS addition to the company's NetGuardians. "The GPRS modem, I didn't know DPS had that on RTUs," she says. The GPRS modem in the NetGuardian series provides cellular access to RTUs in locations without direct internet access, allowing Bakhesh and KNPC to monitor remote locations without hard-line internet access. "We have many remote sites that I think would make good use of that."
